BSA High Adventure Opportunity Summer 2010 - July 1–11, 2010

Northern Tier (http://www.ntier.org)

Boy Scout Troop 572 and Venturing Crew 572 have secured reservations to participate in BSA High Adventure at Northern Tier. This opportunity is a canoe experience for the outdoorsmen that would love to spend a couple weeks in the Boundary waters of Northern Minnesota and Quetico Provincial Park in Canada .

This outing will involve the participant’s commitment to a crew of eight in pre-outing planning, practice voyages and securing appropriate equipment and funds to make the trip.

Please review the “Official” website of Northern Tier as well as the Bravo Crew Journal from a previous crew of Troop 572 to canoe in the great wilderness. In the journal you will find many photos of the environment as well as read about the day-to-day activity during that trip.

We have reserved slots for 3 crews and need to submit our deposit to lock in the reservations by the first week of May. If we fail to do so our reservations will be released to other interested Boy Scout units. Prior to that time we may be able to accommodate additional crews should there be enough interest. Once we make our reservations it will be difficult to add or subtract a Scout from the crew. For this reason we are asking for a commitment to the trip.

A crew consists of three canoes, eight participants from Troop/Crew 572 and one interpreter staff member assigned to the crew at Northern Tier. There can be a one-to-one ratio of scout to adult in a crew (4 Scouts, 4 adults). Each canoe has three participants. Each crew needs a minimum of two adults, three preferred.

Please note, we cannot guarantee which crew you will be assigned to. Parents will be on the same crew as their son(s). Crews will not participate on the same voyage. They will prepare and travel together. Once at Northern Tier the crews will immediately be separated until completion of their voyage.

Estimated cost is $1,200 + gear.

Qualifications are as follows:

Venturers:

  • Must complete CPR and First Aid
  • Must pass the BSA Swim Test in 2010
  • Must complete Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat
  • Must commit to active participation in preperation program - now until departure
  • other requirements will be determined by the Crew leadership once the Crew is formed.

Adults:

  • Must be currently registered with Boy Scouts
  • Must complete all Advisor/Scoutmaster training prior to Winter of 2009
  • Must complete CPR and First Aid
  • Must complete Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat
  • Must pass the BSA Swim Test in 2010
  • Must commit to active participation in preperation program - now until departure

Anyone interested in participating on the trip that does not currently meet the qualifications will be placed on the wait list. If a registered qualified member needs to withdraw at a later date, the slot will be filled in wait list order (date and time wait listed and current qualifications) per the above qualifications. History shows that some members of the wait list will get the opportunity to participate.

Because we are not sure of the level of Scout and/or parental interest that may wish to participate we are in the process of establishing guidelines in which the participant registration list will be prioritized.

Please email Mr. Zedan (advisor@crew572.org) immediately if you are interested in participating
